Lakes in India Son Beel:

Son Beel (Pron:Shon Bill)(bill or beel means “lake” in the local Bengali language) is one of the largest lakes in southern Assam in India. It is situated in the Karimganj district, and is the largest wetland in Assam state. The speciality of Son Beel is that during winter season it becomes fully farm land where Rice (called ‘Buro’ rice) cultivation is done and after winter from March onward this piece of land gets slowly filled up with water and become a lake. The depth of this lake is very less so when there is too much of rain then the lake overflows and the excess water channels through the Kakra/Cachua river to the Kushira river and eventually flows into Bangladesh. Son Beel is also famous for its mixed characteristics i.e. both Lotic and Lentic ecosystem exists here. The Shingla river is flowing through the middle of Son Beel, therefore the fauna of this Beel are very rich,
Although it can be a lake, but the water of this lake can be seen in the summer seasons only.rest of year you can find a clean land there. Therefore,

Similarly, as there is no water during the winter seasons in the lake, so people than starts cultivating rice, and this system is been continued from many years.this is the way of living style of the locality of this place. “Most of the people don’t know the fact that it is the Second Largest Wetland in Asia

Dipor Bil, also spelt Deepor Beel (Pron: dɪpɔ:(r) bɪl) (Assamese: দীপৰ বিল) (bil or beel means “lake” in the local Assamese language), is located to the south-west of Guwahati city, in Kamrup district of Assam, India It is a permanent freshwater lake, in a former channel of the Brahmaputra River, to the south of the main river. It is also called a wetland under the Ramsar Convention which has listed the lake in November 2002, as a Ramsar Site for undertaking conservation measures on the basis of its biological and environmental importance.

Considered as one of the largest beels in the Brahmaputra valley of Lower Assam, it is categorised as representative of the wetlandtype under the Burma monsoon forest biogeographic region.

The Dipor Bil is reported to provide, directly or indirectly, its natural resources for the livelihood of fourteen indigenous villages (1,200 families) located in its precincts. Freshwater fish is a vital protein and source of income for these communities; the health of these people is stated to be directly dependendent on the health of this wetland ecosystem. A member of Deepor Beel Fishermen’s Cooperative Society has succinctly stated: “Our forefathers protected this wetland and we are committed to do the same as we depend on the wetland for our livelihood. We will protect this wetland at any cost and against any odds”

The name Deepor Beel is stated to be derivative of the Sanskrit word dipa which means elephant, -r means “of” and bil means wetland or large aquatic body in Assamese language, inhabited by elephants

It is claimed that beel was an important dockyard of the Tai-Ahom as well as the Mughals. The medieval history reports of Ahom-Mughal conflicts. It is also stated that Kampitha and Rambrai Syiemship (the supreme political authority is known as the Syiemship in Meghalaya). had control over this area

It is located 13 km South West of Guwahati on the National Highway (NH. 31), on the Jalukbari-Khanapara bypass, alongside its north western boundary. PWD road skirts the northern fringe of the Rani and Garbhanga Reserve Forests on the south. The National Highway 37 borders the beel on the east and north-east and the Engineering College Road on the north. Also, minor roads and tracts exist in the vicinity of the beel. The beel is about 5 km from the Guwahati Airport (GNB Int. Airport). A broad gauge railway line skirts the lake

– The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched IRNSS-1I navigation satellite from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The satellite was launched on board of PSLV-C41 (height of 44.4 meters and weight of 321 tonnes) after the normal lift-off and was successfully placed in the designated orbit. It was overall 20th flight of PSLV-XL version and 41st successful mission of total 43 of PSLV.

– The IRNSS-1I is overall eighth satellite to join ISRO’s NavIC navigation satellite constellation. It replaced IRNSS-1A, the first of seven navigation satellites of IRNSS series that was rendered ineffective after its three rubidium atomic clocks failed. IRNSS-1I was made by Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technologies in collaboration with ISRO.

– The IRNSS-1I was having lift-off weight of 1,425 kg and has life span of 10 years. It carried two types of payloads: Navigation and Ranging.  They are L5 and S-band navigation payloads and C-band ranging payloads. It also has corner cube retroreflectors for LASER ranging. It will be stationed in Geosynchronous Orbit at 36,000 km height.

Strategic location, state of the art facilities, low tariffs and huge potential for future development is what best describes the deep sea port of Gopalpur. Located along the east coast of India in the state of Odisha, Gopalpur is the key port for handling the growing marine traffic.

Situated between Paradip and Visakhapatnam port, Gopalpur offers excellent rail and road connectivity. The broad gauge Howrah-Visakhapatnam-Chennai east coast trunk route which runs parallel to the east coastline is just 6 km away from Gopalpur port site. Close proximity to NH5 (Kolkata-Chennai) and State Highway No 7 and 17 provide excellent road connectivity to and from Gopalpur.

After the erstwhile fair weather port was hit and destroyed by the super cyclone in 1999, the Government of Odisha (GoO) decided to develop the non-function fair weather port to an all weather direct berthing port.

Starting with three deep water berths and two dry cargo berths, each capable of handling 120,000 DWT, the envisioned master plan is to have 15 to 20 berths of 18.5m depth along three separate harbors. Initially port will have storage capacity 300,000 ton iron and 600,000 ton coal which can be later upgraded as per requirement.
Government of Odisha has awarded this ambitious task of developing the Gopalpur port to Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL).

The Port of Anchorage (POA) is a deep-water port located in Anchorage, Alaska with 3 bulk carrier berths, two petroleum berths, and one barge berth. It is an enterprise department of the Municipality of Anchorage. As such, the Port is distinguished from other types of municipal departments largely because it generates enough revenue to support its operations without being a burden to Anchorage property tax payers, and it also pays a fee-in-lieu of taxes to help run city government.

The POA provides critical transportation infrastructure to the citizens of Anchorage and to a majority of the citizens of the State of Alaska both within and beyond the Railbelt. Seventy-four percent of all the waterborne freight and ninety-five percent of the refined petroleum products entering the state through Southcentral Alaska ports is shipped through the Port of Anchorage. This includes 100 percent of the jet fuel supplied to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and approximately 66 percent of the jet fuel for Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

The Port Director is appointed by the Mayor and reports to the Municipal Manager. There is a nine-person Commission, also appointed by the Mayor, responsible for promulgating the Port’s terminal tariff. Despite its enterprise distinction, the Port acts as a standard municipal department with the Anchorage Assembly approving its annual budget, contracts, tariffs, and leases. Additionally, needed legal, financial and other day-to-day support are provided, for a fee, by the appropriate general government departments acting as an extension of the Port’s staff. All Port operating activities are subject to municipal code.
